VF-12 “Flying Ubangis” were aboard CV-18 WASP for two cruises: November 1951 to February 1952, and May to December 1952. I think the image was probably taken after Navarre recorded the 35,000th ‘trap’ aboard WASP sometime during one of those two cruises. VF-12 flew cruises with ‘Banshees’ aboard only three carriers (WASP, FDR & MIDWAY) before transitioning to A4Ds. I don’t think FDR or MIDWAY would have recorded that many traps (35,000) since their commissioning by that point… or I could just be ‘reading’ too much into the photo 🙂
